Luke 19:1-10
Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”

No indication how much time passes between verse 7 and 8.

But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”
Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

The phrase, “I must” in verse 5 is the same phrase used in John 4:4 “Now He had to go through Samaria.”

Like the encounter with the Samaritan Woman in John 4 was a divine appointment,

so is Jesus’ encounter with Zacchaeus in Luke 19.

Jesus has a habit of reaching out to the most __________and ___________people.

Romans 3:9-10
What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage? Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin. As it is written:
“There is no one righteous, not even one;

Romans 3:22

This righteousness is given through _________ in Jesus Christ to all who _____________.

Transformative faith is ___   ___________________.

1.       Read Luke 19:1-10, what are some things that Jesus was doing during/before this scripture that might have made Zacchaeus want to see Jesus?   Would you ever climb a tree to get a better look at someone?  What are some of the social and political implications of Zacchaeus climbing a tree to see Jesus?

2.       Is it popular to follow Jesus today?  Has it ever been?  Do people follow Jesus today because of popularity?  What would be your reaction if Jesus said he’s coming over to your house right now?  Would you be willing and ready to receive him or would there be some anxiety to get some things in (spiritual) order?

3.       What does it mean in verse 9 that “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.”?  Are all people who are “son(s) of Abraham saved?  Why or why not?  How is someone saved?

4.       Read Romans 3:9-20, what does the word righteous mean?   What is meant but “no one is righteous”?  Can we live righteously?  Why or why not? What does it mean in verse 18 to have “fear of god”?

5.       Can we get righteousness?  Read Romans 3:21-23, what does it mean that there is no difference between Jew and Gentile?

6.       Do you think Zacchaeus was converted to Christianity?  Cite specific scriptures as to why or why not.

7.       What is faith?  Read Matthew 7:21, do people who call on Jesus automatically have faith?  Do we have to also do God’s will to have faith, why or why not?

8.       How do you know if you are truly saved?
