What is important to you?

This is the basic question that we are going to be looking at today. Many things are important to us in life. Let us look at what the bible has to say about material things. When we look at the bible we see what Jesus talked about most, it is not the things that we would thing about as being the most important. It is not love or forgiveness, nor is it prayer or lack of faith. It is not even the issue of sin. These issues are very important, and Jesus talked all of these many times and about many other issues. So, if it not the issues that we would normally think are the top five issues, then what would be the issue that He talked about most? It is something we usually do not want to think about in our Christian walk. It is the Issue of Money. Jesus talked about money more than any other issue.

So, then the question arises: Why did He talk some much about Money? It is not because He did not know that we need air, food, water, and clothes. He does not want us to worry about these things.

  1. It’s a Trust Issue

Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? (Matthew 6:25-26)

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:31–34)

God wants us to trust him to meet all our needs.

2. Is Money, or God our Master?

‘“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”’ (Matthew 6:19-24)

Do not make it your treasure. Money in itself is is not the root of all evil. 1 Timothy 6:10 says the LOVE of money is the root of evil and Hebrews 13:5 says to keep our lives free of the Love of money.

The third issue that we see about money and material things is greed.

“Then He said to them. “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”” (Luke 12:15)

Greed does not only consist of money or material things although they are the most common. It can be anything that we want more of then we should.

This applies to all areas in our lives

  • It is important in our personal finances.

  • It is important in how we do our jobs.

  • How do we handle our personal business?

Bottom Line:

How we view money and use it reflects our true treasure.

  • What are some of the topics that Jesus covered several times in the Bible? Is there any extra significance when Jesus repeats a subject?

  • Read Matthew 6:19-21

    • What are some heavenly treasures that we can store up for? What are some examples of treasures that the world say we should store up that will not have eternal significance?

  • Read Matthew 6:25:26

    • How would it be possible not to worry?

  • What are some things that can take hold of our life that may not be in accordance with God’s plan for us?

  • What are some ways greed can sneak up on us?

  • What are some ways we try and serve two masters? Share a time when you tried serving both God and something/someone else.

  • Read Matthew 6:27-30

    • Does worrying make us live longer? Can you think of any time in your life where there was a benefit from worrying? Have you had a time in your life when you fit Jesus’ description “you of little faith”?

  • Read Matthew 6:31-34

    • If God already knows what we need should we still reach out to Him in prayer regarding them? What does it mean to seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness? What is righteousness? How do we seek it?

  • Please continue to pray for our country and that God will continue through His Church to bring those who do not yet know His Son to Him. If you haven’t already, would you consider setting a weekly reminder on your phone to pause and pray for the church and God’s guidance to work His will through us? Your prayers make a huge difference.
