Wk 6, “Joy in the Future.”

Philippians 3:12-21

Philippians 3:12-21
Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently that too God will make clear to you. Only let us live up to what we have already attained.
Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

  1. God’s Plan is Progress, Not Perfection

Philippians 3:12
Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.

  1. The Past is the Past… Leave it There!

Philippians 3:13
Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,

  1. There is Hope in the Future, Reach for It!

Philippians 3:14
I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

  1. Have Determination, and Maintain It (v15)

Philippians 3:15
All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently that too God will make clear to you.

  1. We’re in This Together

Philippians 3:16
Only let us live up to what we have already attained.

  1. We Need Godly Examples to Follow

Philippians 3:17
Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.

What makes someone a good mentor, a good role model?

  1. Check for fruits of the Spirit… love, joy, peace, patients, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, (2 Tim 3)

  1. Be aware that there are enemies of the cross of Christ and they could be standing right next to you.

Philippians 3:18-19
For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.

  1. Remember, we are not of this world, we belong to a Heavenly Kingdom

Philippians 3:20-21
But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Colossians 3:1-4
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Standing Firm Without Standing Still

  1. Look to Ahead, not Behind.

Revelation 21:4
‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

  1. Have/Find a Good Mentor

  1. Focus on the Coming of Jesus

John 14:1-4
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

You will find joy when you let go of the past, and look forward our eternal future, remember the words of Jesus when you find yourself looking back…. “I will come back and take you to be with me…”
