Message Notes for Week 3

1 Peter 1:17-25

17 Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. 23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For,

“All people are like grass,
and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
25     but the word of the Lord endures forever.”

And this is the word that was preached to you.

God’s Word does not change!

The Church may change how the Word is presented

but the Church should never try and change God’s Word!

John 3:18: Our default setting is sin!  We all need someone to pay for our sin.

Communion:  Remembering what Jesus did for us by taking on our sin debt!

April 28- We will meet for service at The Bridge in Reno We will join our sister church on this Sunday to say goodbye and thank you to Pastor Bill West and Kim for serving this church for 15 years.  1330 Foster Drive.

  1. What does it mean to be redeemed? Can you think of examples in the Bible of when someone was redeemed?

  2. What does it mean to be Holy? Are we holy?  Why or why not?

  3. Read 1 Peter 1:17-21, what are “works”? What is meant by “to conduct yourselves in fear”?  What did we inherit from our forefathers in verse 18?

  4. Read James 2:20, is it possible to have faith without “works”? Can you go to heaven without “works”?

  5. What are two judgments people will face when this life is over? Will everyone receive both judgments?  Why or why not?

  6. Does everyone have a gift from God to use for His Kingdom? What are some of the gifts that God gives us (please point out where to find these in scripture)?  Do you know what your personal gift is?

  7. Do we owe God for sin? Why or why not?

  8. Read 1 Peter 1:22-24, what is the seed that is imperishable that we are born from? If people say the Bible is dated and not relevant to today’s society, what are some of the ways you could respond to that statement?

  9. Should churches change their structure to accommodate changes in society? Should churches re-interpret the bible to accommodate society?  What is the danger of re-interpretation?

  10. Please pray that God would show you what your gifting is and to give you the strength to start using or to use it more. You matter and the church needs you!!!  Nothing you do for God is too small!
