Message Notes

Revelation 21:1-8
1 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
6 He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7 Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. 8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars —they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

Questions to think about as we go through today’s message.

1. Why do we need a new Heaven and new Earth?
2. With the new Heaven and Earth be Real? Will they have physical form, or will it be in some kind of spiritual state without form?
3. Why isn’t there going to be an ocean?
4. Why is Revelation so confusing?

1 Corinthians 2:9
9 However, as it is written:
“What no eye has seen,
what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”—
the things God has prepared for those who love him—

1. Heaven is, and Will Be a Real, Physical Place

John 14:1-3
1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

Revelation 21:1
1 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.

Heaven- Where God lives
The Heavens- The sky, atmosphere, outer space

Why Do We Need a New Heaven and Earth?

Galatians 5:9
A little Leaven leavens the whole lump of dough.

A little sin goes a long way…

Revelation 21:5
5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

2. We Will Be Physical Beings

Luke 23:43
And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.”

2 Corinthians 5:8
we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord.

Matthew 17:1-4
Six days later Jesus *took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and *led them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, I will make three tabernacles here, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

Transfigure-
To change to another form or to transform.

Revelation 21:1
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.

Do you think the Book of Revelation is confusing?

New Jerusalem-
1500 Miles by 1500 Miles

John 14:1-3
“Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.

The Bride-
All those who believe in Jesus… this is US!

Something struck me this week as I was taking this tour through Heaven, our future home.

As excited as I am to see Jesus, how much more excited will He be to see me, and you?

1. Read Revelation 21:1-8
How often do we think about this future hope? Why do you think there will be a new Heaven and a new earth?

2. Would you consider the book of Revelation to be confusing or hard to understand? What are some of the confusing or hard to understand parts for you?

3. What is Heaven? What are some things about Heaven that we know from scripture?

4. Read John 14:1-3
What do you think it means that a place is being prepared for us? What does it mean when Jesus says He will come back and take us to be with Him? When and how do we go to Heaven?

5. Read 2 Corinthians 5:8
What does it mean to be absent from the body?

6. Read Matthew 17:1-4
What is the significance of the transfiguration?

7. The Church in scripture is often called the bride of Christ, what is meant by that term?

8. Read Revelation 21:23
What is the significance of no darkness in the new Jerusalem?

Please continue to pray for the teaching team as God powers us through this sermon series. Pray that God will reinvigorate the church’s desire to tell someone about Jesus so they too can inherit the hope of heaven too.
