Proverbs Background-

 Written By:

Solomon

Date Written:

Unlike other book of the Bible, Solomon the author didn’t sit down and write this book in order at one time. Rather, it’s a collection of Proverbs collected over a period of time. Some written by Solomon where written around 700BC, others were could have been written around 400BC.

Purpose:

The purpose of Proverbs can be found in the first handful of verses.

Proverbs 1:1-6

The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

for gaining wisdom and instruction;

for understanding words of insight;

for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,

doing what is right and just and fair;

for giving prudence to those who are simple,

knowledge and discretion to the young—

let the wise listen and add to their learning,

and let the discerning get guidance—

for understanding proverbs and parables,

the sayings and riddles of the wise.

Solomon also wrote, Ecclesiastes, and of course Song of Solomon.

A Proverb simply put is a saying that communicates a specific truth in an upfront, clear and concise manner.

Message Notes:

  1. Learn to Fear the Lord

Proverbs 1:7

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,

but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Fearing God includes knowing how much God hates sin and fearing His judgement because of sin. Fearing God is one of the main ideas of the Bible. Learning to fear the Lord is so important that almost every book, maybe every book in the Bible talks about this…

  1. Fear of the Lord Can Help Keep us from Sin

Exodus 20:20

Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”

  1. God Blesses Those Who Fear Him

Psalms 128:1

Blessed are all who fear the LORD,

who walk in obedience to him.

  1. Fearing God IS a Big Deal

Ecclesiastes 12:13

Now all has been heard;

here is the conclusion of the matter:

Fear God and keep his commandments,

for this is the duty of all mankind.

  1. If We Do Not Fear God, We Are Rejecting God

Jeremiah 2:19

Your wickedness will punish you;

your backsliding will rebuke you.

Consider then and realize

how evil and bitter it is for you

when you forsake the LORD your God

and have no awe of me,”

declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.

  1. Fearing the Lord Is Not Optional

Proverbs 1:7b

…”The beginning of Knowledge”…

Proverbs 9:10

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,

and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

James 3:13

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

  1. The Neglect of Fearing the Lord

Proverbs 7:1c

…”fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Despise-

Scorn or hold in contempt

Fool-

A person lacking in judgement and prudence

The Benefits of Living with the Fear of the Lord

  1. Consecration-

    (to set yourself aside, or dedicate yourself to God and His will/work)

Proverbs 3:7

Do not be wise in your own eyes;

fear the LORD and shun evil.

Proverbs 8:13

To fear the LORD is to hate evil;

I hate pride and arrogance,

evil behavior and perverse speech.

  1. Confidence-

Proverbs 14:26

Whoever fears the LORD has a secure fortress,

and for their children it will be a refuge.

When we fear God, He’s got us!

  1. Contentment-

Proverbs 15:16

Better is a little with the fear of the LORD

Than great treasure and turmoil with it.

Isaiah 40:8

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of God will stand forever.

Fearing God is living in awe of Him, all that He has done, and all that He is going to do…
