Message Notes for Week 4

1 Peter 3:13-22 NASB

13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.” 15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17 For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. 18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. 19 After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— 20 to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.

Anyone interested in baptism, please contact Pastor Darin!

  1. Read 1 Peter 3:13-14, what does the word zealous mean in verse 13? How would we know what is good?

  2. What does it mean to “suffer for the sake of righteousness” in verse 14? What are some of the ways the world will attempt to intimidate Christians?

  3. Read 1 Peter 3:15-16, what does it mean to “make a defense” in verse 15? What are some ways we can make a defense of the Christian faith?  Does this pertain to a select group of people like the apostles or to everyone?  Why or why not?

  4. What if someone really doesn’t deserve to be treated with gentleness and respect like verse 15 mentions?

  5. How are people “put to shame” in verse 16?

  6. Read Matthew 5:11-12, why is it a blessing to be insulted and persecuted? What do you think is meant by “your reward in heaven is great”?

  7. Is it ever ok in the Bible to seek revenge or to get even? Sight the scripture references for your answer.

  8. Read 1 Peter 3:17-18, what is the difference between suffering for what is right vs. suffering for what is wrong?

  9. What was God’s original design for the world?

  10. Do you know anyone who is suffering right now? In addition to praying for them and asking the group to pray for them, is there something you can do for them this week?  Maybe offer to pick up a meal for them?  Maybe a quick chat on the phone?  Maybe just listen to them and try and understand what they are going through.
