Message Notes

Revelation 12:1-6

“A Great Sign Appeared” tells us this is the beginning of a new vision.

Sign-

Semeion (Greek) A mark or symbol that carried a special meaning or points us to something beyond it.

The Church is not mentioned in this vision, why?

  1. Revelation isn’t about what happens to the church, but what will happen with Israel and the Gentiles during the tribulation.
  2. The Church is united with the Holy Spirit, because of that we’ll be “caught up” with Jesus.

5 Symbolic Characters

The Woman-

Righteous Remnant of Israel

The Dragon and His Armies-

Satan and Demons

The Seven Heads and Ten Horns-

This is the same thing from Daniel 7. Represented the nations opposed to Israel in the Old Testament.

Male Child-

Jesus Christ, the Messiah

Michael and Other Angels

One of the chief princes, he stands guard over Israel, battles demonic forces for God’s people

Offspring-

Tribulation Saints, or those who believe in Jesus post rapture.

Chapter 12:7-12

Two Conflicts In Revelation 12

One in Heaven, and one on earth

Many believe Satan will be in charge of Hell, he’d like to think the king of Hell. The truth is he’s not, not at all.

John Walvoord (1910-2002) Theologian

‘While the concept of Satan in Heaven is difficult to comprehend, it is clear that he is now the accuser of the saints, (Job 1:8; Rev 12:10) Though Satan was defeated at the first coming of Jesus, (John 16:11) his execution was delayed and is in stages.”

Revelation 12:12
12 Therefore rejoice, you heavens
and you who dwell in them!
But woe to the earth and the sea,
because the devil has gone down to you!
He is filled with fury,
because he knows that his time is short.”

Revelation 12:13-17

Once Satan is cast out of Heaven there will be 2 changes we need to take note of.

  1. Satan will no longer have access to God. This means he can no longer accuse followers of Jesus or get permission to tempt them.
  2. The evil on earth will get much worse.

Chapter 12 Application and Summary

  1. Israel may be a blind and disobedient nation, but God has never forgotten them, and His promises have all been fulfilled.
  2. Even though Satan is powerful and aggressive, he will not win.
  3. Today, we may be targets of the devil and his demons, but we should not be afraid because soon, we’ll be with Jesus. Either through the death of our earthly bodies, or Jesus comes. Either way Jesus wins and so do we.

The Dragon will try,

but never kill the woman because she is protected by God.

Because of the child, we should not fear the dragon.
