Message Notes

1 Peter 5:1-7 NASB

Therefore, I urge elders among you, as your fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and one who is also a fellow partaker of the glory that is to be revealed: 2 shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not with greed but with eagerness; 3 nor yet as domineering over those assigned to your care, but by proving to be examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. 5 You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God is opposed to the proud, but He gives grace to the humble.

6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time, 7 having cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares about you.

Psalm 23:1-4 NKJV

The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.  2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters. 3 He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil; For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

If God didn’t correct you when you go astray,

He wouldn’t be a loving God!

Proverbs 13:24 NKJV

He who spares his rod hates his son,
But he who loves him disciplines him promptly.

  1. What is the context of the book of 1 Peter?

  2. Read 1 Peter 5:1-7, when you think of the world “elder” outside of the bible what do you think about? What does the word mean in the context of scripture?  Are there Biblical elder’s outside of the church?  Why or why not?

  3. What are the responsibilities of a shepherd who tends sheep? What are the responsibilities of a shepherd who tends the church?

  4. Read Psalm 23:1-4, what is the “shadow of death”? What is a shepherd’s rod and staff and why would they comfort someone?

  5. Read Proverbs 3:11-12, what are some of the ways the Lord will discipline us? Does it always seem to be fair?

  6. In John 21, Jesus gives instructions to Peter. What are they and what do each of them mean?  How are the sheep of the church fed (John 21:17)?  Is there more than one way?

  7. What are the steps of church discipline outlined in Matthew 18:15-17?

  8. Different bible-based churches emphasize different things giving some things more attention and some things less. Is there any one way to “do” church?  Is one way wrong and another way right?  What are some things that cannot be compromised?

  9. What are ways we can prove to be examples to the flock in 1 Peter 5:3? What are ways we can we be poor examples to the flock?

  10. Please continue to pray for the leadership of the church and that God would continue to use each of us to reach out to a world that see’s everything but Jesus to be the answer.
