Message Notes for Week 8

Old Testament=Old Covenant=Covenant of Works

New Testament=New Covenant=Covenant of Grace

Covenant:  Any of the promises made by God at different times, such as those made to Noah, Abraham, or David and their descendants, or the new covenant inaugurated by Jesus Christ.

Grace: Unmerited Favor

1 Samuel 10:9-10  ESV

9 When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart. And all these signs (that Samuel had told him about) came to pass that day. 10 When they came to Gibeah, behold, a group of prophets met him, and the Spirit of God rushed upon him, and he prophesied among them.

Galatians 5:22-23  ESV

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Matthew 7:15-17 ESV

A Tree and Its Fruit

15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit.

1 Samuel 16:6-7   ESV

6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.” 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:12-13   ESV

Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, !Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward.

James 4:5. ESV

5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?

Event’s Committee

See Jennifer for more details.

  1. Who are the first 3 kings of Israel that were anointed by God to be King?

  2. What is the Old Testament/Covenant? How does it compare with the New Testament?  Are Christians bound to the old testament/covenant?  Why or why not?

  3. What is grace? What are works (in a biblical sense)?  Must you have both of these to be a Christian?  Why or why not?

  4. What was the leadership like in Israel before Saul became king?

  5. Read Galatians 5:22-25, using a bible app or concordance, what is the word used for patience in verse 22? Should Christians pray to receive this fruit of the spirit?  Why or why not?  Is there any scriptural evidence to support your answer?

  6. Read 1 Samuel 16:13, what is the context of this verse? What does it mean that the “Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward”?  How does this differ from Saul’s experience with the Spirit?

  7. As Christians, can God’s Spirit ever leave us? Why or why not? Read 1 Samuel 16:14, is there a difference in the Old Testament/Covenant vs. the New Testament/Covenant in how the Holy Spirit interacts with people?

  8. Please continue in prayer for the leadership of the church to follow God’s will for His church.

Galatians 5:22-23 ESV

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
