Crazy Things That Jesus Said

Week1: “Before Abraham was, I am”

John 8:48-59

11/24/24

John Arobio

Message Notes

Jesus spent a lot of His ministry righting the wrong doctrines that men had developed. Jesus had a new message. Just believe in Him! A revolutionary message that would change the world. Instead of being bound by over 600 laws in the Old Testament and hundreds more made by the religious leaders of the time, the weight of the payment of sin was transferred to one Man, Jesus.

John 14:6 ESV

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.”

Pharisees accuse Jesus:

John 8:48-49 NASB

48 The Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not rightly say that You are a Samaritan, and You have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; on the contrary, I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.

Jesus’ First Claim:

John 18:51

51 Truly, truly I say to you, if anyone follows My word, he will never see death.”

The first claim is that if you followed Him that you would have eternal life.

Thus, by simply believing is Jesus and with no other works you receive eternal life and never die.

Luke 20:38 ESV

Now He is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live in Him.

Jesus Second Claim:

Part 1: John 8:56

56 Your father Abraham was overjoyed that he would see My day, and he saw it and rejoiced.”

Since Jesus had only just been born thirty years ago he could not see him unless Jesus had been alive in heaven before he was born on earth and Abraham would have had to been in God’s presence after his death.

Part 2: The Big Outrageous Claim

John 8:58

58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”

The important word that He uses to claim this is “I AM” (Jehovah). This is the same thing that God gave as his name in Exodus “I AM” (Jehovah). He is Jehovah, the eternal God. He had been alive before the earth was formed and would be there at the end of time. Because they understood what he was saying, and they took stones to kill him by stoning him to death.

What Three Things can we learn from this:

  1. First is that those who believed in him would live free of sin and those who did not would die in sin. He is the only way sent by God to do this.

  2. Second is that He had been alive since before time began and would be there alive for eternity.

  3. Third is He was God and anyone who believed in him would have eternal life.

The Bottom Line:

Jesus is God and has been alive forever,

now is and will be alive forever.
