What is Passover? (Exodus 11-12)

Exodus 12:27 NIV

²⁷ “then tell them, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’”

Over the years, the holiday lost its significance and became commercialized. Jesus deals with this as He enters the temple:

John 2:16 NASB

¹⁶ and to those who were selling the doves He said, “Take these things away from here; stop making My Father’s house a place of business!”

What is the primary “business” of the church?

We should be about our __________ business, as Jesus teaches us:

Luke 19:10 NASB

¹⁰ “For the Son of Man has come to seek and save that which was lost.”

We should chase after the _________!

Luke 15:3-4 NIV

³ Then Jesus told them this parable: ⁴ “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? ⁵ And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders ⁶ and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ ⁷ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.”

Looking for a sign?

John 2:18 NASB

¹⁸ The Jews then said to Him, “What sign do You show us as Your authority for doing these things?”

We may be looking for God to do some kind of special _______ just for us when He already has the answers for us in His _________.

Hebrews 4:12 ESV

¹² For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, even penetrating as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Maybe you’re waiting for a sign from God and He’s waiting for you to take the step first!

What step have you been pushing off?

Jesus gave them a sign, and they had no clue what He was talking about:

John 2:19 NASB

¹⁹ Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

If you are not in God’s ______, you will not understand the signs from God.

You cannot be in God’s Will unless you are in His ________.

John 2:21 NASB

²¹ But He was speaking about the temple of his body.

They didn’t understand much about Jesus until ____ _______ ________.

We must be born again!

The Bible says to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

“Many believed in His name as they observed His signs which He was doing.” (John 2:23)  

Is that enough? No.

1. What is the gospel of Matthew, Mark, and Luke collectively known as? Why are they known by that term?

2. What are some of the things that are different about John’s gospel compared to the other three?

3. Read John 2:13-16, what is the Passover? Does it have any significance today?  How many times in scripture is it reported that Jesus turned over the tables at the temple?  Do all the accounts point to the same event?  If we have an alternative opinion about Biblical topics with other Christians, what is the proper way to relay our opinions?

4. What are some ways we can turn the church today into a house of business?

5. What is our primary mission(s) as Christians?

6. What are some things that interfere with our primary mission(s)?

7. Read John 2:17-25, does God still send signs to us today? Why or why not?  If we do get a sign from God, what should be our next step?  Are signs anything we should always rely on?  What can we rely on?

8. What does it mean “believed in His name” in verse 23? Can we believe in Jesus and not be saved?

9. Read Hebrews 4:12, what is the difference between a “soul” and a “spirit”?

10. How can we please God?

11. What is faith? Did Jesus disciples understand everything Jesus said to them?  Do we understand everything Jesus tells us in the Bible?  What are some things from the Bible that we can fully understand?
