John 3:1-2 WHO IS NICODEMUS?

Nicodemus is from a group called _____ ________________.

Pharisees means “____ _______________.”

According to Josephus, there were about __________ of them.

This group is constantly against Jesus with few exceptions.

Nicodemus is one of the (two) exceptions.

__________ means teacher. It was a great honor to be called Rabbi.

Nicodemus honors Jesus for what He has done so far in His ministry.

Nicodemus saw some of the __________ Jesus did and it piqued his interest.

John 3:3 JESUS WILL SHOW NICODEMUS ANOTHER MIRACLE

Jesus turns Nicodemus’ false hopes of _____________ upside down.

Born Again = Born “________ __________”

To be born again is to be born into the ___________ ____ ________!

We become a ________ of God at our “second birth.”

John 3:4-5 BEING BORN OF WATER AND THE SPIRIT

Nicodemus is confused. He goes straight to the __________ aspect.

John 3:8 THE WIND, JESUS EXPLAINS FURTHER

Where does the wind come from? Where does it start? End?

When you are born of the ________, you don’t know exactly what God will have in store for your life!

John 3:9 YOU DON’T WANT TO ACCEPT WHAT WE’RE TELLING YOU

John 3:14-15 DON’T LET AN IDOL COME BETWEEN YOU AND GOD

In Exodus, Moses lifted up the ___________ in the wilderness.

  John 3:3 NIV  

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”

  1. Read John 3:1-3, what is a Pharisee? Who is Nicodemus?  Why do you think he came to see Jesus at night?  What is meant by ruler of the Jews?

  2. What is meant by “signs” in verse 2? Does God still give us “signs” today?  Why or why not?

  3. Who are the Sadducees in scripture? How do they differ from the Pharisees?

  4. Read John 3:4-8, what does it mean to be “born again”? Can you be a Christian and not be born again?

  5. What is meant by “born of water” in verse 5? If you have a difference of opinion about something that is in the Bible, what are some ways you can voice that difference with other Christians?  What are some things we should not do when sharing our opinion?

  6. What is the baptism of the Holy Spirit in the Bible? If you are unsure of anything that is in the Bible, what are some ways you can use to look something up?

  7. What is the role of the Holy Spirit?

  8. What are some core doctrines of the Christian faith? What are some things that are not core doctrines that it is ok to disagree on?

  9. Read John 3:9-15, what is meant by “the teacher of Israel” in verse 10? What is a “testimony”?   What is the difference between the Old Testament/Covenant and the New Testament/Covenant? What is meant by “Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness”?  How does this pre-figure Jesus?
