April 20, 2025 Sermon Notes and Questions

Easter Sunday

“He is Risen”

John 20:1-18

April 20, 2025

Justin Scarberry, Interim Teaching Pastor

Welcome!  If you are new to the church or if you having been coming for some time it is so awesome to have you here on this wonderful Resurrection Sunday!  What an awesome day that we celebrate our Lord Jesus walking out of the grave!  Our salvation is secured knowing that our trust in His sacrifice for our sins paid our way into heaven.  We invite you to take one of the Bibles that is on the back of the chairs, it is yours to keep!  I pray that God touches your heart today and that you would leave filled with God’s Spirit!

Pastor Justin

Sermon Notes

After being betrayed by one of his hand-picked apostles, illegally put on trial and found guilty of blasphemy,  Jesus was sent to die on the cross.  The death was a hard time for those who followed Jesus.

Helpful definitions:

Messiah:  Redeemer promised in the Old Testament (books before Jesus was resurrected) to save the Jewish people.   What the Jewish people didn’t know is that Jesus would come to not just save them but to save the world from the consequences of their sin!

The Apostles:  The 12 hand-picked close followers of Jesus.

Disciples:  All others who chose to follow Jesus.

Blasphemy: Speaking out against God.

Jesus told His followers repeatedly that He would die

and be raised again from the dead!

Directly

Matthew 16:21-23

Matthew 17:22-23

Matthew 20:17-19

Matthew 26:31-32

Indirectly

John 2:19

Matthew 12:40

The apostles locked themselves in a room for fear that they would be killed next!

The women who followed Jesus are prominent at every event from the crucifixion to the resurrection!

Mary’s of the New Testament (books written after Jesus’ resurrection)

Mary:  Mother of Jesus

Mary:  Wife of Clopas

Mary:  The mother of James the less and Joses

Mary Magdalene was delivered from 7 demons by Jesus! Possibly from Magdala. (she is not the sinful woman listed in Luke 7:37, she is not the woman who was caught in adultery in John 8:3-4.  The men did not believe her when she told them the tomb was open and Jesus was gone!  She was the first to see the risen Jesus and the first to speak with Him after the resurrection. Was NOT afraid when she met two angels at the tomb.
