Passion Week

Good Friday

Luke 23: 33-43

April 3, 2026

Justin Scarberry

.

We started the series off on Palm Sunday with an awesome event we call ____ ______________ __________.  (Matthew 21:1-11)

.

Throughout the week, there was a major change in opinions of Jesus.

The crowds went from proclaiming “____________ ___ ____ __________!”

to now screaming “ ____________ _______!”

.

Why is it called “Good Friday?”- Jesus’ life on earth came to an end!

  • It’s the Sunday after that makes the Friday before it “Good”
  • Only God can use something so terrible to become such an awesome miracle when it is fulfilled
  • ____ _________ – An instrument of death, transformed to be the instrument of _________ ________ on “Good Friday”

.

Are you on the left? OR Are you on the right?

Like the two criminals, we all have a choice to make!

  • We are all _____________ on either side of Jesus.
  • The one on the left- _________ Jesus and demanding that He do something for us.
  • The one on the right- accepting that we are a sinner and are _____________ from God because of that sin.
  • We can humbly _________ to what God wants to do with our life or we can _________ Jesus’ offer entirely to join Him in eternity.

.

Jesus prayed for those who despised Him, amid unmeasurable pain and suffering.

What would you do?

Matthew 5:44 NIV

44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

  • Pray and communicate with God to _________________________.
  • What is God’s will?
    • “… not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)
  • This includes our __________. Are you praying for your enemies?
  • Why pray for our enemies? Because of who are Father is!
    • “that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good…” (Matthew 5:45)

.

Mocking the Messiah- The first criminal

  • Jesus came to save them from the consequences of their ________.
  • Instead, they _________ Him in His suffering, not understanding the scriptures and what the Messiah would save them from.
  • The first criminal also insults Him and mocks Him.
  • They don’t believe, yet they _________ Jesus to do something for them.

.

Would God be God if He did what we wanted, when we wanted, and how we wanted it done?

  • Instead of trying to figure it all out, the Bible tells us, “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.” (Psalm 23)
  • _________ means that He is in charge of everything in your life.
  • When God has a _______, it will get accomplished 100% of the time! (Isaiah 55:11)

.

“Jesus, remember me…”- The other criminal

  • Both criminals are getting ___________ for laws they’ve broken.
  • One of them understands Jesus is not getting justice.
  • Justice means _______________________________________.
  • The second criminal admitted he was a ___________, knew he deserved to be ____________, but then in faith he asks Jesus to __________ him!
  • Grace: ____________________________________________.
  • The gift was paid for by Jesus on the cross!
  • The Bible says, “by grace you have been saved, through faith” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

.

What if the book ended here? In darkness.

It is “Good Friday” because it didn’t end here!!

Three days later Jesus would rise from the grave!!! Amen!

 .

What choice have you made?

Are you like the criminal on the left- choosing darkness, rejecting Jesus?

Are you like the criminal on the right- choosing light, admitting you are a sinner, and when you’ve breathed your last like Jesus, will be with Him immediately in paradise?
