The Bible

Wk 3, “The Bible and Finality”

Hebrews 1:1-4

Hebrews 1:1-4 (NASB)
God, after He spoke long ago (back to the beginning) to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the radiance (shekinah) of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.

Isn’t it good to know that God has never left His people without word? God, over the entire course of history has gone out of His way to make sure His people heard from Him so they would know that He cares.

Hebrews 1:1-2
In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son,

  1. The Inheritance-

Hebrews 1:2
“…whom he appointed heir of all things…”

Philippians 2:9-11
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

  1. Jesus was the Driving Force of Creation

Hebrews 1:2
and through whom also he made the universe.

  1. Jesus is the Radiance of God’s Glory

Matthew 17:1-3
After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.

  1. Jesus is God’s “Exact Representation.”

John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 10:30

I and the Father are one

Matthew 1:23
“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

Titus 2:13
While we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,

Isaiah 44:6
“This is what the LORD says—Israel’s King and Redeemer, the LORD Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.

  1. Jesus Sustains Everything

Psalms 135:6-7
The LORD does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths. He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth; he sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.

  1. Jesus is God’s Final Word Because He Sacrificed Himself for Us.

Hebrews 1:3
After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

Acts 4:12
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

God’s Final Word is Jesus!

1. Read Hebrews 1:1-4, what are the various ways that God speaks to us?  How has God spoken to us “by His Son”?  What do you think is meant by the “heir of all things”?

2.       Read Philippians 2:9-11, what does it mean that God gave Jesus a name that is above every other name?  Do you think that is also true in the secular world?

3.       Read Psalms 135:6-7, why do you think a God who is all powerful that sustains everything made the redemption of man through the suffering and death and resurrection of His son?

4.       Why do you think it’s significant that Jesus went to the cross of His own free will?

5.       What is meant by Jesus is the radiance of His (God’s) glory?
