Who We Are

Week 4 Bold Action

Jan 16, 2022

Matthew 14:22-33

Core Values

Bold Action: We believe our God is a Big God who does big things in our world, we therefore want to be faith-filled, big thinking risk takers who never choose to play it safe.

Matthew 14:22-23 (NASB 2020)

Immediately afterward He compelled the disciples to get into the boat and to go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away. After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone. But the boat was already a long distance from the land, battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”

Peter responded and said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water, and came toward Jesus. But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and when he began to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out with His hand and took hold of him, and *said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” When they got into the boat, the wind stopped. And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “You are truly God’s Son!”

Unbelief Leads to Hardened Hearts

Mark 6:52

They had not understood the incident of the loaves. On the contrary, their hearts were hardened.

Staying tethered/connected to Jesus is critical in our storms.

When God ordains something, it will get done 100% of the time.

Where is Jesus in our Trials?

He’s right there with you, guiding you through.

The disciples didn’t yet know who Jesus is.  When we don’t know who Jesus is we squawk at God (Greek “krazo”).

Who is Jesus to you?

What keeps us from going “krazo” in the storm?

  1. Understanding who He is
  2. Understanding “Who We Are” in Him.

God was there in their storm.

Exodus 3:14

And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “This is what you shall say to the sons of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”

Some of God’s names in scriptures (of more than 100)

Jehovah-the self existent one/the Lord

Jehovah Jireh-The Lord our Provider

Jehovah Tsidkanew-The Lord our Righteousness

Jehovah Rapha-The Lord our Healer

Jehovah Shalom-The Lord our Peace

God becomes whatever you are lacking in.  He fills that void.

Acts 17:11 tells us that we should test all spirits.

Amos 8:11

“Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord God, “When I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine of bread or a thirst for water, But rather for hearing the words of the Lord. (NASB)

A famine for God’s Word is coming… Or is it already here?

4 Step on How to be Successful in Every Storm:

  1. Hear from God and
  2. We’ve verified though God’s word the action He wants us to take, then we
  3. Step out in faith and
  4. Continue to keep our eyes on God, our Bold Action will be successful.

God is with us in our darkest times.

Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

If you’re in grievous storm reach out to God in prayer and reach out to someone at the church!!!  Don’t wait hoping it will blow over.

Are you a stay in the Boat Christian or a Walk on Water Christian?

God creates all storms.

Isaiah 45:7 tells us:

I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things. (NIV)

3 Storms:

  1. Chastening Storm
  2. Testing Storm
  3. Unknown Storm

Is there someone God is asking you to take a Bold Action with?

  1. Read Matthew 14:22-32, what are the 3 things that stand out the most to you in these verses? Do you feel that people are more inclined to believe after witnessing miracles, less, or unchanged?
  2. How do we stay tethered/connected to Jesus? What are some things that get in the way or disconnect that connection?
  3. Do you ever feel that Jesus is missing in action when you’re going through a storm? Why do you think we have “winter” periods with Jesus when it seems like He’s just not there?
  4. Who is Jesus to you personally? What are some ways He’s filled in the parts where you were lacking?
  5. Would you have gotten out of the boat in that storm? Why or why not?
  6. How important is examining the scriptures to you? How important should it be?  If there is a difference in the two answers what are some bold actions you can take to close the gap?
  7. What are some things that hold us back from taking that first/hardest step? Is there something God has put on your heart but you’ve been hesitant to get moving on?  What do you need to get you moving?
  8. Read Isaiah 45:7, is it surprising that the Lord creates disaster? Is it possible to understand that scripture before our storm?  While in the storm?  After the storm?  Why or why not?
  9. Are you willing to share of a storm in your life that God has delivered you out of or of a storm you’ve yet to be delivered out of? How can the group help you in your storm?  What are some things we shouldn’t do when people are in a storm in their life?
  10. Pray for each other and pray for the church and continue to pray for our country and its leaders.
