“After these things… Jesus went up to Jerusalem.”

John 5:1

1. Read John 5:1, why does it say, “Jesus went up to Jerusalem”? What is the Greek for “After these things”?  What has happened so far that the Apostle John is referring to by “After these things”?

2. What are some opinions of when John wrote this gospel? What are the other 3 gospels collectively known as and why?

3. Why do you think God has given us 4 gospels?

4. Read John 5:2-6, what languages were the original scriptures written in that we have in our Bible today?

5. What is the significance of sheep in the Bible?

6. If someone who didn’t know anything about church or the Bible asked you to explain grace, how would you explain it?

7. Turn in your Bible to John 5:4, is it there? Why do you think it is not included in some Bibles?  Does it make one translation better than another?  Where does the Bible, as we know it today, come from?  Are there any doctrines/teachings that are changed from the different translations?

8. Read John 5:7-15, what is faith? Does everyone have faith?  If not, how do we get it?  If so, how do we increase our faith?  Why do you think Jesus heals people in different ways?

9. Why do you think some people were complaining about what this healed man was doing (verse 10)?
