Various Scriptures

Message Notes

Cultivate-

To prepare and use for a specific purpose

***God did not create us to be alone***

Genesis 2:14

The Lord God said, “It is not good for mans to be alone.  I will make a helper suitable for him.”

1. To Celebrate and Support Each Other

Matthew 26:37-38

37 And He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with Him, and began to be grieved and distressed. 38 Then He *said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me.”

2. We Need Relationships to Learn and Grow

Acts 2:46

Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart,

3. To Lead People to Jesus

1 Peter 3:15

15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, but with gentleness and respect;

Jesus Cultivates Relationships with His Disciples

Matthew 4:18-20

Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And He *said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of people.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.

***By this time, Jesus was not a stranger to these ancient anglers.

He’d already spent time with Andrew and some others***

John 17:15

15 I am not asking You to take them out of the world, but to keep them away from the evil one.

1 Corinthians 9:22

I have become all things to all people, so that I may by all means save some.

…Becoming all things to all people…

  1. Listen- We have two ears and one mouth
  2. BE KIND- Even when the disagree with you, or you disagree with them.
  3. Culturally Sensitive- Try to understand the culture of where you are and who you are talking to. Understanding does not mean agreeing.

To cultivate a relationship means to spend time

helping it grow into something for a greater purpose.

  1. Without looking online what would you say the core values of our church are? Take a look online and see which ones you were able to correctly pick.  Are there any that are not in the Core values that should be there?

  2. How important are relationships in a church? How important are they outside of a church?  Can someone be an “isolated Christian”?  Read Genesis 2:14, what are some of the reasons being consistently alone can be  a problem?

  3. What are some of the reasons given in the sermon that we should have relationships in the church?

  4. Read 1 Peter 3:15, what does it mean to “make a defense”?

  5. What does it mean to “follow Jesus”? Read Matthew 4:18-20, what is meant by “fishers of people/men” in verse 19?

  6. Read John 1:35-42, what is a Messiah?  Why would the Jewish people would be trying to find the Messiah?

  7. Read John 17:14-15, why does Jesus not take us out of the world? How can we avoid isolating ourselves from non-believers?

  8. Read 1 Corinthians 9:22, what do you think is meant by this passage? What are some of the ways Paul became all things to all people?

  9. Please continue to pray for Pastor Darin and his family. Pray that the transition and search teams would continually seek God’s guidance for His church as we move forward. Pray that God would give you someone outside of your comfort zone to start cultivating a relationship with.
