Proverbs 19:10

Listen to advice and accept discipline,
and at the end you will be counted among the wise.

  1. What does the Bible say about listening?
  2. Is God listening to me?
  3. How do we listen to God?

  1. What does the Bible say about listening?

Mark 4:24 NASB

24 And He was saying to them, “Take care what you listen to.  By your standard of measure it will be measured to you; and more will be given you besides.

What we listen to is important.

Proverbs 23:19 NASB

19 Listen, my son, and be wise, And direct your heart in the way.

God has a unique plan that he made you uniquely for if you listen to Him.

  1. Is God listening to me?

Psalm 66:18 NASB

If I regard wickedness in my heart, The Lord will not hear;

Proverbs 28:9 NIV

9 If anyone turns a deaf ear to my instruction, even their prayers are detestable.

Isaiah 59:1-2 NIV

Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear.
2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.

If you are not hearing from God it may be because of undealt with sin in your life.

  1. How do we listen to God?

Proverbs 15:5 NLT
5 Only a fool despises a parent’s discipline;  whoever learns from correction is wise.

God will correct his children:

Proverbs 3:11-12 NKJV
11 My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor detest His correction; 12 For whom the Lord loves He corrects, Just as a father the son in whom he delights.

2 Choices when God corrects us:

  1. Learn
  2. Loathe

Luke 6:46 NASB

46 “Now why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when there was a flood, the river burst against that house and yet it could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; and the river burst against it and it immediately collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”

What have you built your foundation on?

3 questions to help answer the question.

  1. What is the one thing that you look forward to the most?
  2. What/who is the one thing that you could never give up?
  3. What/who do you love the most?

Jesus is the ONLY way:

John 10:27-30

27 My sheep listen to My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give them eternal life, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”

  1. What are some examples in scripture where people either did not listen to God or listened well? Discuss the differences between the examples.
  2. Read Mark 4:24, why is it important that we are careful in what we listen to? Do you think society values what we hear?  Why or why not?  What does “By your standard of measure it will be measured to you” mean?  Will God ever force more on us than what we desire?
  3. Will God always listen to our prayers? Why or why not?  What are some things that might get in the way of God hearing us?
  4. Read Psalm 66:18, what does it mean to “regard iniquity/sin?
  5. What are some things we can do to listen to God?
  6. Is it easy to know when God is correcting us? Read Proverbs 3:11-12, have you ever had a time in your life that God had to correct you?  If you are willing to share with the group please do.
  7. Does God hold our sins against us? Does God remember our sins?
  8. Read Luke 6:46-49, what does this parable mean to you? What are some foundations other than God that the world tells us are good substitutes?
  9. How can we tell the difference between hearing from God and hearing our own desires?
  10. Please continue to pray for our country, the leaders of our country and that God will keep His divine hand on us to guide us to do His will.
