Kings of Israel-David

WK 8 – “God Protects David in Exile”

1 Samuel 23

July 6th, 2025

John Arobio

Context:

Last week Justin looked at David beginning his years on the run. Why was he running? He was running because _____ _____ was trying to _____ him;

Who helped David escape? It was _________ who was David’s friend in spite of being the ____ of ___________.

This week we are looking at chapter 23 which has two parts.

Part 1 David saves the town of Keilah.

1 Samuel 23:1-2 ESV

Then they informed David, saying, “Behold, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and are plundering the threshing floors.” So David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?” And the Lord said to David, “Go and attack the Philistines and save Keilah.”

David does this because Saul is not doing anything to help them and the people have called on David to come and help. He does it in spite of being in exile because he loves the people and wants to help them.

– He learns of the attack on the town and the people call for help from him.

– He prays to God for guidance in the matter.

Deuteronomy 20:3b-4 ESV

Do not fear or panic or be in dread of them, for the Lord your God is he who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.

– He leads him army of 600 men to attack the Philistines and wins the victory.

After the victory he is told by God that _______ is coming with his army, and the people will give David up to _______. So, David and his men leave and scatter to they would not be captured.

God has protected David in two ways.

– He has protected David in battle and gave him the victory

– He warned that Saul was coming and the people would give him up. Thus, _________ had time to escape and be safe.

Part 2 David in Exile.

1 Samuel 23:13 ESV

13Then David and his men, who were about 600, arose and departed from Keilah, and they went wherever they could go. When Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah, he gave up the expedition.

David escaped to the wilderness of ________ in Judah. The Ziphites go to Saul and offer to give up David. Saul hears of where David is and is about to capture him.

1 Samuel 23:26b-28 ESV

As Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them, 27a messenger came to Saul, saying, “Hurry and come, for the Philistines have made a raid against the land.” So, Saul returned from pursuing after David and went against the Philistines.

So, God protects David by having the Philistines attack and drawing off Saul when he was about to capture David.

The Bottom Line:

God protected David so that he could become this King of Israel.

  2. What are some of the events that happened in chapter 22 that might help with the context of chapter 23?

  3. Read 1 Samuel 23:1-5, what is David’s first response when hearing about the plight of the people of Keilah? Where is Keilah in relation to where David is?  Can we ever check with God too much?

  4. David seems to have heard from God immediately. What should we do if we reach out to God and we do not immediately hear back from Him?  David is not the king at this point.  Why do you think that David would be informed of the issue and not Saul?

  5. Read Joshua 1:9, how can we be sure the “Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”. Is this true for everyone?  Why or why not?

  6. David won a great victory to save Keilah. Do you think Saul will be happy about it?  Why do you think so?  Should we be happy for other’s when they win great battles in their life?  Can you think of a time when someone had a great victory and you did not feel happy about it?

  7. Read 1 Samuel 23:13-15, why is Saul looking to take David’s life? Is there ever anything that God does not control or allow?  Have you had any experiences where God allowed something to happen in your life and later turned it into something good? If willing please share with the group.

  8. Read 1 Samuel 23:16-20, who is Jonathan? What kind of relationship to David and Jonathan have?  Do you have someone in your life who will “strengthened his hand in God” like Jonathan did for David?  What might be the consequences of Jonathan supporting David?

  9. How could we find out who the Ziphites are in verse 19?

  10. Read 1 Samuel 23:25-28, have you ever pursued something you know you shouldn’t be going after? What are some of the things that can happen when we head away from God and pursue something we know we should not be doing?

  11. Why do you think God would just not take out Saul to save David?

  12. Please continue to pray for our country and it’s leadership.

Proverbs 8:17 ESV
