Proverbs Recap

Written and edited by Solomon. One of three books he wrote. Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon are the other two.

Purpose was given in Proverbs 1:1-6

Made Up of Five Books

  1. Chapters 1-9, Wisdom and Folly Contrasted
  2. Chapters 10-24, Proverbs of Solomon (written and set in order by himself)
  3. Chapters 25-29, Proverbs of Solomon (set in order by men of Hezekiah)
  4. Chapters 30, Oracle of Ague, Unknown Sage
  5. Chapter 31, Proverbs of a Mother to King Lemuel

Three Important Things About Proverbs

  1. Proverbs bears no unscientific statement or inaccurate truth.
  2. Proverbs is a book of high moral plane.
  3. The Proverbs do not contradict themselves.

First Step as we saw last week was the Fear of God

Second Step is Knowing God

“It is because of him that you re in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God – that is, our righteousness, holiness, and redemption.”  (1 Corinthians 1:30)

Three Parts for gaining Wisdom from God by Knowing Him

  • Part One is Admitting what You do not Know.

A man’s own folly ruins his life, yet his heart rages against the Lord. (Proverbs 19:3)

There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end, it leads to death. (Proverbs 16:25)

Stephen Covey said “Admission of ignorance is often the first step in our Education”

  • Part Two is to Let God Teach us.

“Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.”  (Proverbs 8:32-33)

“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.”  (Proverbs 9:9)

So How do we learn to get wisdom from knowing God?

  1. First way is read and study the bible. God’s wisdom is in all the pages of the book.
  2. The second way is to receive teaching from people who are preaching or read what other people have said in printed sermons and commentaries.
  3. The third way is by following and imitating mature Christians who are in our lives. Also, we need to listen to other Christians.

  • Part Three is to Trust God to Give Us Wisdom and to Lead Us.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5–6)

Closer Relationship to Him

Lastly as we learn more about God, we develop a closer relationship to God. Just like we develop relationships with people as we get to know them better.

  1. Read Proverbs 16:25, is there ever a time in life that we do not need instruction? What are some ways that seem to be right to us but leads to death? Do we run into times as Christians that we think we can “do it without God”?

  1. How can our actions reflect God? How can our actions damage God’s appearance?

  1. What are some ways that God teaches us?

  1. Is it easy to trust God? Read Proverbs 3:5-6, is it possible to trust God with all our heart? What are some things we can do to trust God more?
