John 5:33-47 NASB

Jesus’ Claims- a direct threat to Religious Leaders

He stated that he was the _______ of God.

This was considered _______________, and it was a direct _________ to them.

Reasons this was a threat:

#1 It was a threat to their _____________. They considered themselves experts.

  • If Jesus was right, then they were ___________!
  • They had studied the ___________; the first five books of the Bible.
  • They knew the _____________, which explained/expanded on the Torah.
  • The Talmud had two parts:
    • The ___________– a concise code of Jewish law written in Hebrew outlining the practical application of biblical commandments.
    • The ____________– extensive commentary and debates written in Aramaic. Generations of rabbis analyzed, debated, and expanded on the Mishnah and the Torah.

#2 Jesus was a threat to their ____________.

  • Jesus told people they did not have to accept and blindly follow the rabbis and religious leaders.
  • Jesus told people they could rely directly on _______.

#3 It was a threat to their ___________.

  • They had made money from extorting and cheating the people with money changes and selling animals for _____________.

Witnesses to validate the words of Jesus as true and factual

Deuteronomy 19:15 NASB
“A single witness shall not rise up against a person regarding any wrongdoing or any sin that he commits: on the testimony of two or three witnesses a matter shall be confirmed.”

 John 5:31 NASB
“If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true.”

 .

Jesus’ claims: He was the Son of ________, He could ___________ the dead and give life, He has been given all ________________, and He should be ______________ like the Father.

Witnesses to His claims:

#1 Jesus Himself John 5:31

#2 John the Baptist- John 1:6-8, John 5:33-35

  • John was known as the one ________________ the way for Jesus.

#3 The Works that Jesus did John 5:36

  • The _______________ He performed- changing the material world, healing people in a variety of ways, and raising the dead back to life.

#4 The Scriptures of God’s Word John 5:37-40

A final warning from Jesus

John 5:43 NASB
“I have come in My Father’s name and you do not receive Me: if another comes in his own name, you will receive him.”

If they cannot believe in what Moses had told them about Jesus and Jesus’ words, then they would open themselves up to false teaching and be ready to receive one that comes in his own name. This is the _______–__________! John 5:41-47

The Bottom Line:

Jesus is confirmed by four witnesses:

Himself, John the Baptist, Jesus’ Works, and the Father through the Scriptures (God’s Words).

  1. What is blasphemy? What are some ways we can commit blasphemy today?

  2. What are the first 5 books of the Bible called? Why are they important?

  3. What is the Talmud/Mishnah/Gemera? Are they valid for studying the Bible?  Why or why not?

  4. What issues do the religious leaders have with Jesus and vice versa?

  5. Read John 5:31-36, who is the “John” who is mentioned in verse 33? What are some things we know about him from the Bible?

  6. What is the Old Testament standard for confirming that wrongdoing has occurred? Does that standard still apply to today?  Why or why not?

  7. What are “works” in the Bible (verse 36)? Can any “works” get us into heaven?  If you don’t do ANY “works”, can you still go to heaven?

  8. Read John 5:37-46, what does it mean to testify?

  9. What is meant in verse 43, “if another comes in his own name, you will receive him”. How can we tell false teaching from true teaching?

  10. How can we discern what is the word of God and what is not?
