If Money Could Talk
Week 4, “Living Within your Means”
Proverbs 21:5

Darin Elquist

Message Notes:

Two Extremes in the Communication of Finances in the Church

  1. Prosperity Theology

God Wants you to be healthy and wealthy. And if you just do a few various things, God will give you all the money and healing you want! (Paraphrased)

  1. Totally Avoid the Topic

In an effort not to have people think the church only wants their money, it’s just never talked about.

Both of these extremes are wrong!

Why are we talking about money?

Acts 20:20
20 You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house.

Ideas on Managing God’s Resources Wisely

  1. Budget

Proverbs 21:5a
The plans of the diligent lead to profit…

What are your current priorities?

  1. Have a Savings Plan-

Proverbs 21:20

The wise store up choice food and olive oil,

but fools gulp theirs down.

  1. Avoid Debt-

Proverbs 22:7

The rich rule over the poor,

and the borrower is slave to the lender.

Credit Card Debt-

How much credit card  debt do you have?

How much per month in payments?

Imagine if you could use that money for something else? What would it be?

  1. Don’t Buy on Impulse-

Proverbs 21:5b

…as surely as haste leads to poverty.

Proverbs 19:3

A person’s own folly leads to their ruin,

yet their heart rages against the LORD.

Questions to Ask Before Making Purchases

(This isn’t always easy. Building new habits can be hard and it takes time)

  • Do I have any doubt about purchasing the item (Romans 14:23)?

  • Have I given God an opportunity to supply it (Psalm 37:4; Proverbs 10:3)?

  • Will it aid or hinder my spiritual growth (1 Corinthians 6:12)?

  • Does it put me in debt (Proverbs 22:7)?

  • Is it a good investment (Proverbs 20:14)?

  • Is it meaningful for my family (1 Timothy 5:8)?

  • Why do I want it (1 Timothy 6:9)?

  • Do I REALLY need it?

  1. When you think about prosperity preaching or a prosperity Gospel, what are some things that come to mind?

  2. Read Proverbs 21:5-

What do you think this scripture means?  Discuss how hasty decisions can lead to poverty.

  3. Do you feel there is a proper balance of discussing finances in church?  What would that balance look like?  It was pointed out in the study that some churches avoid the topic of money completely.  Is that a proper biblical take on the issue?  Why or why not?

  4. Read Proverbs 21:20-

Discuss the importance of savings and some of the reasons people struggle in this area.

  5. Read Proverbs 22:7-

How can we become slaves to those we owe a debt?

  6. Read Proverbs 19:3-

Have you ever seen folly lead to ruin?  Do people tend to take the blame when this happens?  Why or why not?

  7. What are some things we can do that where highlighted in the sermon before making a purchase?

  8. Do you feel there is a freedom when you live within your means?  Describe what that freedom is like.  Describe the opposite condition, how it feels when you are burdened with debt.

  9. Pray for each other. Pray for the church. Pray fro God to help us all to use our finances and all our resources to better grow His Kingdom.
