Week 1, In the Beginning God

“Created the Universe”

Genesis 1

John Arobio

Two Choices Regarding the Creation of the Universe

  1. An accidental, “big bang.”

  2. Created by a Creator

Choice One: Spontaneous Explosion

  1. All the energy in the universe had to suddenly appear at one time and place.

  2. All elements to come in existence from pure energy. Thermodynamics and entropy had to be reversed from what happens today.

  3. Lightning hit the primal ooze at just the right time and place and for some unknown reason started life.

  4. Everything we know about DNA for billions, or trillions of times had to not work like it does now.

  5. For some reason evolution suddenly stopped and we cannot see crossovers.

Choice Two: Created by a Creator

Genesis 1:1

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters

Creation summary:

  • Day one – Creation of day by separating Light and Dark.

  • Day two – Creation sky and separated it from the earth

  • Day three – Creation of dry land and the sea by gathering waters in one place. Creation of all the plants

  • Day four – Creation of Sun and the Moon and separation of the light to create Night and Day

  • Day five – Creation of all the animals; sea, air, and land.

  • Day six – Creation of mankind and putting man in charge of the planet.

4 Elements of Creation

  • God created the universe and everything in it from nothing. The word used here for creation is a Hebrew word (bara) which means to create something out of nothing.

  • We are not an accident. We were planned and God has a plan for our lives.

  • God created the world to support us before he created us.

  • Jesus was there from the beginning and was all was created by him

John 1:1

“In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.”ity

The plural Hebrew word for God (Elohim) was used because Triune God was the creator.

4 Elements of the Creation of Man

  1. God created us in his image

  2. God created us to increase and fill the earth.

  3. God made us to have dominion over the earth and all the life in it.

  4. God made us (humans) and all the animals in the world to be vegetarians.

Bottom Line:

We can know that God loves and has a purpose for us because He created the earth for the purpose of supporting human life.

  1. Do you think more people believe in the Biblical creation account or in the big bang theory? What are some of the problems with the big bang theory from a scientific standpoint?

  1. Read Genesis 1: 1-5, the first thing that God did in the creation account is create light and then separate it from darkness. What are some takeaways we can get in our times from this account?

  1. Read John 1:1-3, who does John say created everything?

  1. Read Genesis 1:27-31, what do you think it means to be created in the image of God? Are all people created in the image of God?

  1. Why did God create people?

  1. God said to fill the earth and subdue it. Were we successful in either of these commands?

  1. John pointed out in the sermon that we were originally designed as vegetarians. What was the reason for the change in diet to include meat?

  1. Continue to pray for the church, the pastor and his family, and for God to continue to work on the hearts of those who don’t yet know Him.
