Rebuilding: Catching God’s Vision for Your Life

Nehemiah

“Working it Out”

Nehemiah 2:1-8

Nehemiah 2:1-8
In the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was brought for him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had not been sad in his presence before, so the king asked me, “Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart.” I was very much afraid, but I said to the king, “May the king live forever! Why should my face not look sad when the city where my ancestors are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?” The king said to me, “What is it you want?” Then I prayed to the God of heaven, and I answered the king, “If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can rebuild it.” Then the king, with the queen sitting beside him, asked me, “How long will your journey take, and when will you get back?” It pleased the king to send me; so I set a time. I also said to him, “If it pleases the king, may I have letters to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, so that they will provide me safe-conduct until I arrive in Judah? And may I have a letter to Asaph, keeper of the royal park, so he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple and for the city wall and for the residence I will occupy?” And because the gracious hand of my God was on me, the king granted my requests.

  1. Turn to God

Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

  1. Realize your Limitations (we’re only human)

Ezekiel 36:26-27
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.

  1. Make a Plan

Nehemiah 2:6
“…How long will your journey take, and when will you get back?…”

Nehemiah 2:7-9
I also said to him, “If it pleases the king, may I have letters to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, so that they will provide me safe-conduct until I arrive in Judah? And may I have a letter to Asaph, keeper of the royal park, so he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple and for the city wall and for the residence I will occupy?” And because the gracious hand of my God was on me, the king granted my requests. So I went to the governors of Trans-Euphrates and gave them the king’s letters. The king had also sent army officers and cavalry with me.

  1. Keep Moving Forward

Nehemiah 2:10
When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official heard about this, they were very much disturbed that someone had come to promote the welfare of the Israelites.

  1. Read Nehemiah 2:1-8. Do you think miracles were limited to the days of the apostles and before or do they still happen now?  Do you have a miracle you can share?  Is there a miracle you are waiting for now to happen in your life?
  2. How would you approach an all- powerful king who could end your life at any second?
  3. Darin mentioned two problems we get when God puts a vision on our heart, impatience and fear. Why do you think that happens?  What are some things we should do when we have these problems?
  4. Read Philippians 4:6-7, how often would you say you follow the advice laid out in this scripture? Do we tend to do the exact opposite at times?
  5. Read Ezekiel 36:26-27, do you think anyone besides God can soften the human heart?
  6. What is the first thing you should do when God gives you a vision? What are the next steps?
  7. What do you think God allows confrontation to happen when he gives us a vision of something he wants completed?
