Philippians 4:10-23

Philippians 4:10-23

I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles. Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need. Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account.  I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Greet all God’s people in Christ Jesus. The brothers and sisters who are with me send greetings. All God’s people here send you greetings, especially those who belong to Caesar’s household. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

  1. Joy in all Circumstances happens when we choose to praise God in ALL circumstances

Philippians 4:11

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.

 

  1. We have to learn to be content, it doesn’t come naturally.
  2. Only through Christ you will have joy in all circumstances

Philippians 4:12-13

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

 

How Important is Praising God in Your Life?

2 most common responses to circumstances in your life:

  1. Prey on your enemy and plot to get even
  2. Praise God that he is working on something in your life

 

Joseph had some pretty tough circumstances in his life. He chose not to get even but to praise God instead.

 

Are you storing up treasure on earth or in heaven?

 

Matthew 6:19

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

 

How do we store up treasure in heaven?

 

  1. Ask God what he wants
  2. Do it
  3. Repeat

 

What about the “stuff” of this world?

Ecclesiastes 1:2

“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher.  “Utterly meaningless!  Everything is meaningless.”

 

Are you living your life to glorify God?

Philippians 4:20

To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

 

  1. What does Thanksgiving mean to you? What are some things you are thankful for that God has done for you personally?
  2. Read Philippians 4:11-20, what are some ways we can learn to be content? Are some people more naturally content?
  3. Verse 13 is often used out of context. Review a few different translations for verse 13 of chapter 4. What do you think Paul means by this verse?
  4. Read Psalms 28:7, how important is praising God in your life? What are ways in which we can praise the Lord?
  5. Are Christians supposed to get even? Why or why not?
  6. Put yourself in Joseph’s sandals. He was left for dead and sold into slavery by his own brothers, would you want to get even? Why do you think Joseph doesn’t seem to have any ill will towards his brothers?
  7. Read Matthew 6:19-21, what are some ways we can store up treasures in heaven?
  8. Why is it so important that we continue to do what God wants us to do?
  9. What are some ways God has met your needs as is referenced in Philippians 4:19? What are some things that are wants that we’ve tried to pass off as needs? Are we ever satisfied with wants?
