Message Notes for Week 9

1 Samuel 18:1-9 NASB

Now it came about, when he had finished speaking to Saul, that Jonathan committed himself to David, and Jonathan loved him as himself. And Saul took him that day and did not let him return to his father’s house. Then Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his military gear, including his sword, his bow, and his belt. And David went into battle wherever Saul sent him, and always achieved success; so Saul put him in charge of the men of war. And it was pleasing in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.

Now it happened as they were coming, when David returned from killing the Philistine, that the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with joy and with other musical instruments. The women sang as they played, and said,

“Saul has slain his thousands,
And David his ten thousands.”

Then Saul became very angry, for this lyric [e]displeased him; and he said, “They have given David credit for ten thousands, but to me they have given credit for only thousands! Now what more can he have but the kingdom?” And Saul eyed David with suspicion from that day on.

  1. Who were the first 3 kings of Israel that were ordained by God?

  2. Read 1 Samuel 18:1-5, who is Jonathan? Why might his friendship with David be a problem?

  3. Read 1 Samuel 18:6-9, what are some of the ways jealousy can affect our relationship with God? What is the fear that is settling in on Saul?

  4. Read 2 Timothy 1:7, what is a spirit of fear/timidity? What is the Greek word used for fear/timidity?  How many times is it used in the Bible?

  5. Read 1 Samuel 18:10-11, what do you think it means when it says “evil spirit from God”?   What are some of the ways commentators explain this scripture?

  6. Read 1 Corinthians 5:5, what do you think is meant by the scripture and what is the context?

  7. If someone who was not a Christian asked you to explain the trinity, how would you explain what it is?

  8. Read 1 Samuel 18:12-13, why do you think Saul would appoint David as a commander in his army if he is afraid of David?

  9. Can we lose our salvation? Why or why not?  Can you ever walk away from God after becoming a child of God?

  • Read Galatians 5:19-21, according to this scripture can you continually practice these things and expect to go to heaven? How can we reconcile losing/not losing our salvation with this scripture.

  • Continued prayer is needed for God’s guidance for the leadership team for the direction of the church.
