Message Notes for Week 5

1 Samuel 15:1-9 NASB

Then Samuel said to Saul, “The Lord sent me to anoint you as king over His people, over Israel; now therefore, listen to the words of the Lord. This is what the Lord of armies says: ‘I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, in that he obstructed him on the way while he was coming up from Egypt. Now go and strike Amalek and completely destroy everything that he has, and do not spare him; but put to death both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”

Then Saul summoned the people and counted them in Telaim: two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand men of Judah. And Saul came to the city of Amalek and set an ambush in the wadi. But Saul said to the Kenites, “Go, get away, go down from among the Amalekites, so that I do not destroy you along with them; for you showed kindness to all the sons of Israel when they went up from Egypt.” So the Kenites got away from among the Amalekites. Then Saul defeated the Amalekites, from Havilah going toward Shur, which is east of Egypt. He captured Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and completely destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the more valuable animals, the lambs, and everything that was good, and were unwilling to destroy them completely; but everything despicable and weak, that they completely destroyed.

Amalekites—Consistent enemy of Israel.  Attacked them when they left Egypt on their way to the Promised Land.  They are distant relatives to the Israelites through the line of Esau. Saul was instructed to completely wipe them out.

Sin is like the Amalekites, it needs to be completely wiped out from our life!

We tend to hold onto sin instead of wiping it completely out.

We shouldn’t allow our freedoms in Jesus to affect others:

Romans 14:13-14

13 Therefore let’s not judge one another anymore, but rather determine this: not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother’s or sister’s way. 14 I know and am convinced in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but to the one who thinks something is unclean, to that person it is unclean.

  1. Who are the first 3 kings in Israel who were ordained by God?

  2. What are some of the attributes of Saul at the start of his kingship? What are some of the mistakes he has started to make so far?

  3. Read 1 Samuel 15:1-2, who is Samuel? Who is “Amalek”?  What are some instances of them in scripture? What is their relation to Israel?

  4. Read 1 Samuel 15:3-6, using a bible app, what is the Hebrew word for “destroy” in verse 3? How many times is the word used in the Bible? Is it cruel that God would ordain for even women and children to be killed?  Why or why not?

  5. Read 1 Samuel 15:7-9, what is the issue when we choose to only partially follow what God wants us to do? What are some things that we may consider to valuable to get rid of but also may cause us to stumble in our walk?

  6. What is temptation? Is temptation a sin?

  7. Read 1 Corinthians 10:13, what is meant by “the way of escape”?

  8. What are some ways our sin can affect those around us or generations after us?

  9. Read Romans 14:13-14, what does unclean mean in a Biblical sense?

  10. Continued prayer is needed for the church leadership. There is a lot of work to be done that will take many hours to get through. Please pray that the leadership will continue to lean on God throughout the whole process.

1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV

13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
