John 7:53-8:1-11 NASB

“What then do You say?” John 7:53-8:1-5

  • Jesus went to the ________ ____ __________ (which He often did) and returned the next morning to continue teaching.
  • They had attempted to _________ Him but failed. The Word was too convincing.
  • Next, they tried a different tactic. They tried to put Him in an impossibly tough situation and _______
  • The Scribes
    • Copycats; tasked with meticulously copying the Old Testament _______________ and the ______________ that were added on.
    • _____________ of the Law, they knew the Law in the Old Testament.
  • Old Testament means “______________” or “__________________”
    • It is the agreement between God and His people, the ________________.
    • Included in the agreement was the keeping of God’s ________.
  • In the New Testament, the relationship with God is not based on how well we keep the Law but on how well ___________ kept the Law.

Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground – John 8:6 NASB

  • Jesus didn’t say anything!
    • The Bible tells us, “He who __________ his lips is wise.” – Proverbs 10:19
    • For some people, it is very easy to keep their mouths shut. For others, they may need God’s help to ___________ their mouth (like King David)! – Psalm 141:3

“He who is without sin among you, …”     – John 8:7 NASB

  • Jesus wasn’t paying them any attention. When people do not have good motives, it is often best to ___________ – 1 Peter 3:9

  • They left. They knew what they were doing was wrong, and they had some __________ inside, stirred up by Jesus’ words.
  • When we get called out for our sins, we have two options; pridefully __________ the truth of the accusation and ____________ ourselves profusely or ____________ and head back to God for forgiveness!
  • We can never ________ our sin from God because God knows what is going on with us on the inside. – 1 Samuel 16:7

“Go. From now on do not sin any longer.” – John 8:10-11 NASB

  • Being a Christian doesn’t mean you will not fail, but when God lifts you back up again, you ___________ from the experience.

FINAL THOUGHTS & QUESTIONS

“He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”

How many of us would be able to pick up a rock and throw it at the woman?

Do you judge yourself more or judge others more?

Do you offer the same grace that Jesus offers you?

“He was left alone, and the woman where she was, in the center of the courtyard.”

How many times have people left you when you really needed them most?

Do you ever feel like you are alone in something you are going through?

If you are a child of God, Jesus promises to be right there with you! – Matthew 28:20

God is with you! He promises to be there with you through it all! – Psalm 23:4

He speaks to us in a still small voice. – 1 Kings 19:12

God may take things out of your life to get your undivided attention.

What are some things that are getting in the way of your relationship with Jesus?

What are some things that have consumed you and crowded out your time with Him?

  1. Is our Bible accurate? How would you answer someone who might say that it has been changed several times in history?

  2. Read John 8:1-11, it was noted in the sermon that section of scripture is not in the oldest documents we have. Why do you think it is included then?

  3. What is adultery? What do you think might have been the motivation for them to bring the woman caught in adultery to Jesus?
