WK 26 – “The Truth Sets You Free”

John 8:31-47 NASB

“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free,”

– John 8:31-32

  • Jesus was talking to ______ believers; people who had heard Him and reacted.
  • Jesus said there is more to it; You must hear, believe, and ______ on His words.
  • Hearing is not enough, as seen in the Parable of the Seeds:

Matthew 13:5-6, “…because they had no root, they withered away.”

  • When you are not truly ___________ in Jesus’ words, and trouble hits, you have nothing to hold on to and quickly fall away.
  • How to develop these roots: through ____________, talking to God, and being in His ________, the Bible.
  • Through study you will gain a deeper understanding, and you may see many things that appeared hidden, at first, but are now ______________!
  • __________ alone saves us, but it produces something; we want to continue in His Word and want to do the things that God wants us to do,
  • The proof is in the continuing; James 2:26, “… faith without _________ is dead.”
  • “The truth will set you free”: Jesus the Christ is the ____________ of the world.
    • He is our Lord and Savior when we accept Him and what He freed us from: ______.

They answered Him, “We … have never been enslaved to anyone;”

– John 8:33

  • They forgot they had been in bondage in ____________ and Babylon, and even now, in Rome.

 “Everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.”

– John 8:34-38

  • He corrected them; they had been in _______________ bondage in their history, and they were in _________________ bondage because of their sin.

“If God were your Father, you would love Me,”

John 8:36 NIV   

36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

  1. What is truth? How can we figure out what is true and what is not true?

  2. Read John 8:31-38, how are we set free after we know the truth (verse 32)? What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus? Are all believers disciples?  Why or why not?

  3. Read Matthew 13:5-6, how can our faith be deeply rooted (and not easily uprooted)?

  4. Can you just have faith in Jesus and never do anything that Jesus wants you to do? Read James 2:26, what are some examples of a dead faith?

  5. Why would the people tell Jesus they are Abraham’s descendants? Who is Abraham in the Bible?  What does it mean to be a slave to sin?

  6. Read John 8:39-47, why do you think Jesus would tell them their father is the devil? What are some characteristics of the devil that the bible gives us?  How can we listen to God for what He wants us to do?
