Message Notes

Holy-

Dedicated or consecrated to God or a religious purpose.

Consecrated-

Having been declared sacred

1 Peter 1:10-12

As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries,

11 seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.

12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.

1. Think Ahead

“Therefore, prepare your minds for action…” (Vs. 13)

Proverbs 21:5

The plans of the diligent certainly lead to advantage,

But everyone who is in a hurry certainly comes to poverty.

2. Keep Sober

“…keep sober in spirit…” (Vs. 13)

Notice it says “KEEP” sober implying that sober is your default.

Because of your faith in Jesus, you are able to maintain a certain level of calm.

Keeping sober in spirit-

To be calm, and collected in spirit, to be temperate, dispassionate.

1 Thessalonians 5:6

so then, let’s not sleep as others do, but let’s be alert and sober.

3. Set your Hope on Grace

“…set your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

(Vs. 13)

2 Corinthians 4:18

…for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

1 John 3:3

And everyone who has this hope set on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

According to John, hope and holiness go together.

4. Don’t Be Conformed to This World

 1 Peter 1:14

As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance.

Romans 12:2

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind,

so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

5. Be Holy!

1 Peter 1:15-16

but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior;

because it is written: “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.”

Leviticus 11:44-45

For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, because I am holy. And you shall not make yourselves unclean with any of the swarming things that swarm on the earth.

45 For I am the LORD who brought you up from the land of Egypt, to be your God; so you shall be holy, because I am holy.’”

In Leviticus 20:26, this same mandate is linked to the role of Israel as God’s special people…

Leviticus 20:26

So you are to be holy to Me, for I the LORD am holy;

and I have singled you out from the peoples to be Mine.

Reasons to be holy:

Because God told us to (obedience)

Because God is holy (imitation) we imitate those we look up to

Because the people in and around our lives are watching. (1 Pet 2:12)

It really only takes two things to be holy

  1. We must be set apart from the world
  2. We must be different from the world

Holiness is a journey, it does not happen overnight, and it does not happen on its own.

It takes the power of the HS along with your willingness to be obedient.

Be Holy, for I am Holy!
